The pattern
People with this pattern tend to act fast on concrete information. You may notice you're comfortable making a call with partial data and correcting as you go, and impatient with discussion that isn't converging.
There's usually good real-time awareness here — you tend to read what's actually happening in a room, as opposed to what was planned to happen.
What tends to come easily
- Decisive under pressure. When a situation is live and moving, this pattern tends to perform better than it does in planning.
- Practical realism. You generally work from the situation in front of you rather than how it was supposed to be.
- Direct communication. Many here say the thing plainly, which saves a great deal of time.
Where it tends to cost you
Not flaws to fix so much as the predictable trade-offs of the same tendencies listed above.
- Speed outrunning consequence. Acting before the downstream effects are clear works often enough to be reinforced, and the failures tend to be expensive.
- Impatience with groundwork. The unglamorous preparation is frequently what determines whether the fast move lands.
- Bluntness with cost. Efficient delivery and well-received delivery aren't the same thing, and the difference usually matters later.
At work
Strong in fast-moving, tangible roles with immediate feedback. Long planning cycles and abstract work tend to go poorly. You usually need a counterpart who thinks in quarters.
With people close to you
Typically engaged, fun, and present. Sustaining attention through the unexciting periods is usually where the deliberate effort is required.
Under pressure
Often increases activity — more doing, more stimulation — as a way around sitting with the problem.
Commonly misread as
The quick action is sometimes read as not caring about consequences. More often the consequences simply weren't the thing in focus.
Worth keeping in mind
These four scales are gradients, not categories. Most people sit somewhere along each one rather than at an end, so a letter can come out differently on another day — particularly on any scale where you landed near the middle. Useful as a starting point for thinking about yourself; not a fixed description of who you are, and not a reason to rule anything out.
